Among Clemson receivers, the good vie young

Keep an eye on Clemson jersey numbers 3, 8 and 17; they belong to freshmen WRs Artavis Scott, Demarre Kitt and Kyrin Priester. Coach Dabo Swinney says they’re going to get the ball this fall.

CLEMSON – With the early departures of receivers Sammy Watkins and Martavis Bryant to the pro ranks and the suspension of Germone Hopper for the bulk of spring drills, young receivers were afforded plenty of chances to make their mark during Clemson's spring camp.

Apparently, Coach Dabo Swinney's trio of talented rookies did just that.

The Tigers’ summer depth chart, which was released Tuesday, lists freshmen Demarre Kitt, Kyrin Priester and Artavis Scott as backups at the team’s three receiver positions.

They represent half of the six freshmen who are included on the depth chart on offense.

“They’re going to be good freshmen, but they’re going to be really, really good career players here," Swinney said. “They have all the qualities you could possibly want.”

Kitt, a 6-foot-1, 195-pounder from Fayetteville, Ga., was lauded for his quick grasp of the playbook in the spring. He is listed on the depth chart as a second-teamer behind sophomore Mike Williams at the Tigers’ “9” receiver position and has been compared to former Clemson star DeAndre Hopkins, who’s with the NFL’s Houston Texans.

Priester, a 6-1, 185-pounder from Lilburn, Ga., is an athletic playmaker who spent last fall at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy. He is listed as a back-up to Charone Peake at the “5” receiver position.

Scott, who is the fastest of the bunch, will enter the fall listed as a second-teamer behind senior Adam Humphries at the “2” receiver slot.

The 5-11, 185-pound Scott, who is from Oldsmar, Fla., reminds Swinney of former Clemson standout Jacoby Ford, now with the NFL’s New York Jets.

“They’re all special,” Swinney said of the freshmen. “We've got a lot of coaching, a lot of teaching, to do, but they have the right mindset and the right skill set.”

3 freshmen at WR? I hope they are as good as everyone says. No one will be able to replace Sammy though.

I am excited to see what these young fellas will be able to contribute this fall. I saw where someone stated on another board that Clemson was now Wide Receiver U. Fitting u believe especially with us taking Deon Cain out from underneath FSU and Florida in their own state. Dabo and company are recruiting really well this year. Betting we picked one more 4* before it's all said and done or an athlete.
