Howard’s Rock Vandalized Again, Pedestal And Case Damaged
By: collegespun.com

Update: Clemson has released an official statement on the matter, confirming that there was a vandalism attempt, but the rock itself was not damaged. They have removed it from the grounds.

Earlier: For whatever reason, Clemson’s famed Howard’s Rock has been the target of vandalism a number of times in its nearly 50-year stay in Death Valley. Less than two years ago, a giant chunk of it was broken off, and an 18-year-old Tigers fan was arrested in the aftermath. It looks like another attempt was made Tuesday night.

According to a number of reports, including one by TigerNet.com’s David Hood, someone attempted to vandalize Howard’s Rock Tuesday night, but was unable to break through the protective casing around it. It’s also reported that the pedestal and case were both damaged. There is an active police investigation regarding the matter.

There’s no word as to whether there is video of the incident. We’ll keep you updated.

Damn, whoever did that did a good job completely destroying the case. Why would you want to vandalize the rock that bad? I thought they put up more cameras?

What did they use a sledge hammer? How could no one hear this? There are dorms right down the street. Someone had to be out, or at least awake..

This apparently happened before or right around 6 am. Used some type of crow bar off of one of the construction crew trucks. I would be willing to be that they had gates open since there is so much construction going on. All I can say is so much for the Univ PD being effective in monitoring the security camera and the supposed sensor alarms that are supposed to notify them of tampering with case. If I was the chief of campus police I would be pretty embarrassed.

What they need to do is put it on the university webcam page where the public (I.e fans, alumni, etc) could watch it. That would be much more effective than the PD watching that one camera.

Now that is a great idea. It wouldn't hardly cost anything. But I would put 2 web cameras on it like they do with Bowman field. One from each side.

Like what they tweeted earlier about it rising out of the ground right before the game. Would look so cool with it rising slowly with smoke coming out.
