Explosive athlete ‘loves’ Clemson
By: Michael Burns, The Greenville News

McCloud arrived on campus for the Dabo Swinney Football Camp Tuesday morning with his parents and longtime friend Deon Cain, a recent Clemson commitment

CLEMSON – With only three more scholarships available for the 2015 signing class and a need remaining on the defensive front, Clemson coaches may add only one more offensive weapon to a group ranked in the top five of the nation by every major recruiting service.

And that may be Ray-Ray McCloud, a versatile, explosive and prolific four-star prospect from Sickles High School in Tampa, Fla.

McCloud arrived on campus for the Dabo Swinney Football Camp Tuesday morning with his parents and longtime friend Deon Cain, a recent Clemson commitment, then quickly began flashing home-run speed and sticky hands as receivers coach and recruiting coordinator Jeff Scott watched him work through drills.

Visits to UCLA and Southern Cal are scheduled for later this month, and trips to Ohio State, Notre Dame, Ole Miss and Alabama are also slated before he makes a decision, his father, Ray McCloud, said.

“We’ve got to do it the right way. We appreciate it. It’s a blessing,” said Ray McCloud. “Hopefully he can make a decision before fall and move on from there. He’s open right now. Everybody asks his top five, but he really doesn’t have a top five right now because he’s still got some schools he has to go see that we made our word to. We have to keep our word and integrity.”

As a high school junior McCloud rushed for 2,316 yards and 26 touchdowns, averaging nearly 8 yards per carry, while catching 11 passes for 173 yards and another score. The 5-foot-10, 180-pounder has been offered by Alabama as a cornerback, but Clemson, Florida and the other contenders for his services want him as a combination receiver and running back.

“He’s one of those dudes that can run for 1,000 and catch for 1,000,” his father said.

The question Clemson fans have is will he do it for the Tigers. He’s grown up close to Cain, and the Tigers also have another Tampa-area product in the fold in offensive lineman Jake Fruhmorgen, but McCloud says that won’t be a determining factor in his choice.

“We love Clemson,” said his father, Ray. “We like Clemson. They’re up there. They’re one of the ones up there.”

• Also among offered prospects working out at camp this week is J.C. Chalk, a 2016 tight end from Argyle High in Texas who is the grandson of Gene Stallings.

The Clemson connections to Stallings run deep and wide. Swinney played for Stallings at Alabama, where Clemson administrator Woody McCorvey served as his offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Danny Pearman served on staff.

Offered 2016 receiver Delontae Moore (6-1, 175) of Ballou High in Washington, D.C., left Clemson Tuesday with the Tigers still firmly his leader.

“I think the Tigers have an all-around great program,” he said. “I believe they focus on more than just football. It’s like a family when you go to Clemson. That’s why when I put a picture up (of Clemson) I put ‘Home Sweet Home.’”

Summerville offensive lineman Zack Bailey, perhaps the only other remaining offensive target for Clemson’s 2015 class, worked out at camp for a second day Tuesday, spending time alongside Fruhmorgen and graduate assistant Dustin Fry, a Summerville native who played in the NFL after an All-ACC career at Clemson.

Five-star tackle Mitch Hyatt of North Gwinnett (Ga.) and four-star lineman Noah Green of Boiling Springs were also on hand at Tuesday, and they hung out with Fruhmorgen watching drills Tuesday afternoon.

Reporting a Clemson offer Tuesday after a visit to camp was 2016 Manvel (Texas) offensive lineman Austin Meyers (6-5, 285). He was part of a Manvel contingent that included offered 2016 receiver Reggie Hemphill (6-1, 175), who also has offers from LSU, Notre Dame, Mississippi, Michigan State, Louisville and others.
