Clemson adds to ‘New Wide Receiver University’
By: Michael Burns, The Greenville News

Through social media and multimedia, not to mention direct recruiting pitches, receivers coach and recruiting coordinator Jeff Scott has branded Clemson as the “New Wide Receiver University,” and the achievement of several of his recent star players seems to support that claim.

As he pointed out in a graphic he circulated Thursday – the day before the announced commitment of coveted receiver Deon Cain – Sammy Watkins is making $19.9 million in the NFL, DeAndre Hopkins $7.6 million, Martavis Bryant $2.7 million and Jaron Brown $1.5 million.

In Cain, the Tigers may have a future addition to that chain. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound four-star prospect from Tampa Bay (Fla.) Technical High School announced a commitment to Clemson this afternoon.

Cain is ranked the No. 5 athlete and No. 57 player in the nation by ESPN, and he has been among the most sought-after recruits at his position for Clemson, Florida, Florida State and others. He has reportedly been timed at 4.40 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

Florida, LSU, Georgia and Tennessee were his other top choices, and Alabama, Florida State and Ohio State are among the schools that offered him a scholarship. Cain has played quarterback in high school, passing for 1,945 yards with 13 touchdowns while rushing for 731 yards and four touchdowns last year, and he’ll bring ball skills and ability after the catch at receiver, as his highlight film shows (www.hudl.com/athlete/1096509/highlights/74937375).

“Cain has tremendous upside as an offensive skill player,” ESPN’s scouting report reads. “He has some physicality combined with smooth athleticism to be a difference-maker with the ball his hands. His speed, burst and ability to create big plays will make him a highly sought-after prospect in this class. Once he learns little nuances of his college position, his best football will definitely be ahead of him.”

Clemson's recruiter for the Tampa area, Tony Elliott, attended Cain's spring game last week with Scott. Cain and his mother, Celia, visited Clemson last month with Tamp Bay Tech coach Jayson Roberts.

Not counting 2014 grayshirt commitments expected to enroll in 2015, the Tigers have 16 players committed for a recruiting class ranked No. 4 in the nation before Cain's announcement, and they’re expected to sign around 25.

With four-star prospect Shadell Bell and Cain now in the fold, Clemson is expected to add at most one more receiver. Five-star prospect George Campbell (6-4, 185) of East Lake High in Tarpon Springs, Fla., which sent Artavis Scott to Clemson this year, is among remaining Clemson targets at receiver.

Plant High offensive lineman Jake Fruhmorgen is another Clemson commitment from Tampa, Florida, and four-star running back Ray-Ray McCloud III (5-10, 180), a friend of Cain’s, is among Clemson’s remaining targets in Tampa. McCloud rushed for 2,316 yards and 26 touchdowns, averaging 7.72 yards per carry, last year at Sickles High.

They are definitely fitting that mantra. Check my post in multimedia for a graphic that CU released promoting that fact.
