Official History of Clemson's Colors
« on: April 25, 2014, 02:38:50 AM »
The first colors of Clemson are shown on an early diploma displayed on campus. Bet you didn't know they're red and blue! The orange and purple started when Walter Merritt Riggs formed Clemson's first football team in 1896, and because Riggs came from The Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama (later renamed Auburn), he took some influence from their team colors (orange and purple) and also borrowed their mascot, the Tiger. Although the football team was known as the Tigers and often used "Eat 'Em Up, Tigers" as a slogan, it wasn't until 1954 that a student actually donned the mascot suit. The Tiger Cub was not added until 1993.
